According to sources, Apple is reportedly in talks (which may have been going on for months) to acquire supercar maker McLaren. While some reports indicate a possible acquisition, this is also being considered as a strategic investment. It is being said that, Apple isn’t just eyeing the automotive division of McLaren, it wants to own McLaren Technology Group, the parent company of all McLaren businesses.

McLaren Automotive is not a very big comoany, it reported $617 million in revenue for the entire year of 2015, which is evidently not a very huge number, translating to $27 million in net profit. However, the company is famous for its super-fast cars and Formula-1 beasts. It’s most famous project was the McLaren F1, a car that was the fastest in the world for many years. Since then, McLaren has expanded to hybrid powertrains, lightweight materials and aerodynamic advancements.

Previosuly Apple acquired Beats, this time, it might have to spend somewhere around  $1.3 billion and $2 billion to acquire McLaren. As far as the McLaren is concerned,  it is currently working on McLaren P1 which is said to be fully electric, which further aligns it with Apple’s ambitions. This is strategically the perfect timing for Apple to acquire a start up like McLaren, with its own “Project Titan” trying to get to the market its completely autonomous, self-driving electric car.

If this deal goes thru, it will be a win-win siutuation for Apple. While there is no gaurantee that the deal will happen, but if it does, it will be very interesting to see how it changes the scenario for Apple.
